Illustrator Florence Petz first created the imp like creature after seeing it in a dream, and possibly took its name from a 19th century poem. In Petz's day, a Billiken charm doll (or better yet, receiving one as a gift) was said to give the new owner luck and alleviate their worries; nowadays, the Billiken brings Saint Louis its luck on the court.
