She had just undergone several spinal operations and had difficulty walking, which is why she is shown here in a wheelchair. The work pays tribute to Dr Juan Farill, the surgeon who operated on her several times and supported her during this difficult period. It is one of the last self portraits she made, at a time when painting demanded an immense effort.
